Introduction
External ventricular drainage is a temporary solution in the case of acute hydrocephalus. The aim of the study is to present the most important nursing tasks necessary in the care of a patient with external ventricular drainage.
Material and methods
The method of an individual case study was used in the work. The case of a 49-year-old female patient is presented, who was diagnosed with an aneurysm of the right internal carotid artery subjected to embolization of the aneurysm and assuming external ventricular drainage.
Results
Throughout the period of maintaining ventricular drainage, the patient required continuous monitoring of vital signs, water balance, monitoring of drainage, and draining cerebrospinal fluid. Despite the lack of a neurological deficit, she required assistance in all everyday activities.
Conclusions
The nursing team for a patient with external ventricular drainage performs several specialized tasks: therapeutic, caring, preventive.
