Introduction: Correct nutrition in diabetes is one of the basic therapeutic strategies leading to normoglycaemia.
Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the composition and qualities of diets available in clinics and diabetology outpatient clinics for diabetics.
Material and methods: The material for analysis was 49 diets for diabetics with approximate calorific value of 1500 kcal per day. The nutritional value of tested diets was assessed with the Dietetyk2 computer program.
Results: In tested diets large differences were found in the minimum and maximum energy value, and also in individual elements of the diet. Analysis of diets shows that carbohydrates formed a large part, especially lactose and sucrose. We found too low supply of thiamine, riboflavin and vitamin D and deficiency of calcium, zinc, magnesium and iron. Moreover, in the discussed diets high levels of phosphorus and sodium were found.
Conclusions: Long-term following of this type of irregularity may have grave health consequences.
