Hemophilia is characterized by persistent, prolonged bleeds, difficult to manage. Hemorrhages occur either spontaneously or following trauma or surgery. Hemophilia is caused by deficiency of one of the clotting factors: factor VIII (hemophilia A) or factor IX (hemophilia B). Clotting factor replacement is needed in various clinical situations, also in the perioperative setting. Clotting factor concentrates should be administered from the day of surgery until wound healing is complete. The role of a nurse in the surgery ward is very important and includes not only comprehensive care of the patient at the day of surgery, but also close cooperation with the surgeon and hemophilia treatment center regarding administration of appropriate doses of factor VIII concentrate and monitoring of laboratory parameters in the perioperative period.
