Introduction. Professional self-government of nurses and midwives represent the largest professional group in Poland, has over 250 thousand.
the members. Among the tasks of Government is the keeping of registers: nurses and midwives. Based on data contained in them may be represented by the characteristics of Polish nurses and midwives.

The aim of the study. The purpose of the study was to conduct a demographic analysis of nurses and midwives registered at the Regional
District of Nurses and Midwives in Lodz.

Material and methods. The exam covered 14 886 registry nurses and 1989 midwives (as of December 31, 2009). The analysis also included
data from additional 24 Regional Districts of Nurses and Midwives among 45 functional districts in Poland.

Results. Exams show that in the Regional District of Nurses and Midwives in Lodz the biggest group (35.3%) of nurses is at the age of 41–50. The youngest nurses at the age of 21–30 constituted only 3.5% of the cohort. The biggest group (34.9%) of midwives is at the age of 41–50. Among midwives, the percentage of the youngest midwives was three times higher than nurses. The analysis concludes that more nurses are entering retirement age than younger ones applying for the job. The midwives group does not show such a critical situation. Analysis of 24 Regional Districts of Nurses and Midwives shows similar phenomenon compared to the Regional District of Nurses and
Midwives in Lodz. The most numerous groups of nurses are aged 41–50, 31–40 and 51–61 years. The youngest (21–30) nurse group constitutes only 5.4% of
registered nurses. The most numerous groups of midwives are aged 41–50, 31–40 and 51–61 years. The youngest (21–30) midwives group constitutes only
9.6% of registered midwives. The average age of nurses and midwives that are actively engaged in the occupation is about 42 years.

Conclusions. It is therefore important to note that there is no new generation of nurses. The professions of nurse and midwife are rapidly ageing ones. The number of nurses graduating from school does not meet the needs of the ageing polish society, with growing requiremets for nursing and long-term care. The current school systems for nursing and midwives make it impossible to increase in the short period of time the number of nurses and midwives starting work in the health system. It seems that taking action by city council, county council and above all national council, aimed at improving working conditions and opportunities for
skills development, will increase the prestige of the profession of nurses and midwives and will increase interest in these professions.
