Introduction: Hollowed chest (pectus excavatum) is a rare congenital deformity and cosmetic defect. Appropriate preparation for the Nuss procedure and positive psychological attitude of a child are vital for recovery and early discharge home.

The aim of this study is to review selected tasks of a surgical nurse based on an example of the Nuss procedure performed in a child with hollowed chest.

Material and methods: The article describes the case of a child operated using the Nuss procedure at the Department of Surgery and Urology for Children and Adolescents, Nicolaus Copernicus Pomeranian Center of Traumatology. We present results of an individual case study, review of literature, and data collected during follow-up.

Results: Surgical treatment of hollowed chest requires particular involvement of surgical nurses in psychological support of a child and its mother/caregivers; this task should be included in newly developed surgical nursing standards.
