The conditions of functional efficiency of patients in early post-operative period after surgical treatment of lumbar-sacral spine discopathy

Aim of the study: The aim of the carried out research was to assess the functional condition of patients who were surgically treated and who suffered from lumbo-sacral spine discopathy, as well as finding the factors determining this condition. Material and method: The research was carried out at the Neurosurgical and Neurotrauma ward with the Streamlining ward at SP ZOZ Dr J. Biziel City Hospital in Bydgoszcz between June and November 2007. The group of researched people consisted of 46 patients admitted to hospital because of lumbo-sacral discopathy who were later admitted to be surgically treated. In this research there were used Functional Rate “Repty” (WFR), a visual analogue pain scale (VAS) as well as other socio-demographic data entered by respondents in a survey form. The measurements were taken on the day before surgery and on the day of leaving the hospital. Results: The collected material was analysed statistically by reviewing the hypothesis at the significance level of p?0.05. The physical efficiency before the surgery was 101.30 points, after the surgery 100.43 points. Men and people in their fifties and/or above 50 do function worse before the surgery; however, afterwards citizens of big cities and women tend to function worse. The average pain before the surgery was 6.46 points, after the surgery 3.34 points. Conclusions: 1. Patients suffering from lumbo-sacral discopathy, both before and after surgical treatment, display full functional autonomy. After a performed operation, on the day of discharge from hospital this autonomy is a little lower than before neurosurgical treatment. 2. There is little relation between functional efficiency of a patient and socio-demographic factors like sex, age, place of living, occupational status and kind of performed job, whereas education is an independent factor in functional autonomy. 3. The pain does not determine functional autonomy before and after surgery, although its intensity on the day of discharge from hospital is absolutely lower than before the operation.
