The diabetic foot infection – microbiological analysis

One of the most serious complications in diabetic patients is diabetic foot. Diabetic foot infections are caused by different bacteria. The most frequent pathogens are: Gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. Gram-negative bacteria and anaerobic bacteria often caused chronic wounds. Because of diabetic foot is serious diagnostic and therapeutic problem occurence of bacteria as an etiological factor was estimated. The aim of this study was to evaluated the antimicrobial susceptibility of isolated strains.

The study included 32 clinical cases patients with diabetic foot. Patients were hospitalised at Dr A. Jurasz Uniwersity Hospital in Bydgoszcz from January 2008 to June 2010. We analysed wound swabs. Bacteria were cultured in aerobic conditions.

The analysed strains most frequently came from patients hospitalised at Department of General and Vascular Surgery 17 (53.1%) and Department of General Surgery and Endocrinology 6 (18.8%). Four cultures were negative. From 28 clinical samples 56 isolates were cultured: 32 (57.2%) Gram-negative rods and 24 (57.2%) Gram-positive bacteria. Eight isolates were recovered as monocultures. Among Gram-positive strains the most frequent was isolated E. faecalis , and Gram-negative – P. mirabilis . Among analysed Staphylococcus spp. strains two were methicillinresistant. Three E. faecalis strains were resistant to high concetrations of aminoglycosides. Among Gram-negative rods 7 strains produced AmpC ß-lactamases. Seven strains were multidrugresistant.
