Prevalence of cardiovascular diseases remains an important epidemiological and therapeutic issue. The ankle-brachial index (ABI) is a simple and inexpensive tool for quick screening of patients with peripheral arterial disease. Moreover, ABI is an important prognostic index to estimate the risk of cardiovascular episodes. The present paper discusses the rules of ABI measurement and its prognostic and diagnostic significance.
