Leptin and adiponectin are classic adipokines produced in the white adipose tissue. They exert pleiotropic effects on organism and currently their role in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis is intensively studied. The role of adiponectin and leptin in chondrogenesis and osteogenesis is still unclear. These processes are crucial in rheumatoid arthritis because of massive destruction of joint cartilage and bone in this disease. The influence of these two adipokines must be elucidated as well as their influence on differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells. In this article we present current knowledge on adiponectin and leptin influence on chondrogenesis and osteoblastogenesis (Table I, II).
