Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy in children – evidence based nursing practice

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is recognized, the method of choice in cases involving the implementation of medium-and long-term enteral nutrition. The indication for PEG in children assumptions are primarily dysphagia caused by neurological disorders. Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy is the medical procedure in which gastrostomy tube is passed into the stomach using gastroscopy. Realization of her is burdened small quantity of complications smaller than gastrostomy exacting laparotomy or chronic feeding by nasal-gastric tube. According to the recommendation of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) implementation of nutrition through the PEG should be made as early as possible when it becomes ineffective oral feeding. The patient’s nutrition is based on individual nutritional plan. In practice is applied industrial balanced diet or mixed diet with natural product. Feeding patients by PEG according to the rules and appropriate care consistent with evidence-based nursing (EBN) to minimize the risk of complications and contribute to the stabilization or improvement of quality of life.
