The clinical and laboratory link between impaired lipid metabolism or atherosclerosis and chronic inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been established over the past decade. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are currently considered as the main cause of mortality in RA. This unfavourable tendency could be reversed by systematic evaluation of cardio-metabolic risk factors, tight control of RA activity, standard preventive activities and implementation of statins. National guidelines of lipid-lowering therapy and clinical data concerning RA as a potential risk factor of CVD should be taken into account in the planning of statin therapy.
