Throughout gestation there is a close relationship between maternal and fetal blood glucose concentrations. There is strong evidence that good glycemic control is essential for an optimal outcome of pregnancy in diabetic women. This includes the prevention or reduction of perinatal and obstetrical complications such as congenital malformations, fetal growth (LGA and SGA) and neonatal morbidity as neonatal hypoglycemia, hypocalcemia, hyperbilirubinemia, cardiomyopathy or respiratory distress syndrome.
