Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis

Development of new diagnostic and therapeutic technics makes possible to keep many patients alive. At the same time it carries risk of development of diseases which have not been observed in human pathology until now. Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) is one of these diseases which is resembling systemic sclerodermia and characterized of skin and internal organs fibrosis. Without treatment this illness leads to the patients death. Patients who developed NSF were in advanced stages of chronic kidney disease. The relationship between exposure to gadolinium containing contrast agents and the appearance NSF symptoms was proved. Early diagnosis and prophylactic measures may prevent development of this disease. It is very important to inform physicians about this problem.
