Introduction: Obesity is one of the factors which causes a risk of many civilization-related diseases, and its occurrence is connected with rapid development of bariatric surgery.
Aim: To assess complications after surgical treatment of pathological obesity based on our own material.
Materials and methods: During the period between 1.10.2004 and 30.11.2007 there were 112 patients who underwent surgical procedures due to pathological obesity in the Division of General Surgery in Wejherowo. SAGB was performed on 100 (88.5%) patients; all were laparoscopic. GBP was performed on 10 (8.8%) patients. There were two VGP performed and sleeve gastrectomy in one case.
Results: There were two cases of surgical wound infection, one stricture of gastroenterostomy, two cases of respiratory failure, two of flaccid paralysis and one case of depression. In the group of patients undergoing SAGB there was one case of disconnection of the catheter, two cases of band slippage and one case of stomach perforation under the band, six cases of respiratory failure after an operation and two cases of port migration due to infection. Two patients had the band put near the stomach, which had to be corrected later.
Conclusions: The most popular method of surgical treatment of pathological obesity in our division is SAGB. The occurrence and kind of complications after bariatric operations do not differ from medical sources with the exception of placing the band near the stomach, which occurred twice. The number of complications is connected with the learning curve. The effect of operation might be thwarted by lack of the patients\' cooperation after the surgical procedure. That should induce the team of doctors to make a more detailed assessment before an operation.
