The research presents problems concerning women with hearing disorder, that appear during the pregnancy period and the child-birth. They are connected with difficulties in communication with medical staff. In the available literature there exist sparse reports on the topic of the childbirth of the deaf. Authors did not reach the data which would show infor-mation about the availability of personnel qualified in contacts with deaf-and-dumb in Polish hospitals. The main message of the study is to direct the attention on the problem of pregnant deaf women, and to form an inspiration among the medical staff of Polish hospitals to take action to start studying and mastering sign language, which is probable to become an official language. We hope that this research will somehow be a mobilization for the medical staff to take action in the direction of improvement in the area of communication with the deaf, and that the childbirth accompanied by midwife using sign language will be a satisfying experience, both for the parturient and for the medical staff in the labour room.
