This article summarizes current knowledge about vaginal microflora and describes factors which are thought to maintain and disrupt the vaginal equilibrium. Selected infections of the female genitourinary tract are described further on in the text. Next part concentrates on the basics of probiotics introducing their present definition, WHO/FAO criteria for selection and evaluation of probiotic
strains as well as potential uses of probiotics in gynecology.
