Introduction:
The experience of traumatic events, and the resulting consequences in the form of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, are both risk factors associated with the development of various types of addictions. The aim of the study was to confirm any links between trauma and the severity of problems stemming from gambling and alcohol use, and to determine the predictors of gambling addiction and alcohol dependence. The indicators of trauma were the number of experienced traumatic events and PTSD symptoms.

Material and methods:
The study was performed online. Of the 190 original participants, 120 remained after the inclusion criteria were applied. The respondents were aged 18-71 (M = 35.75; SD = 14.85) of whom the majority were women (58.3%). Each completed four standard measurement tools and a survey developed for the purpose of the study.

Results:
The results indicate that PTSD symptoms correlated positively with the severity of problems resulting from gambling and with alcohol use. No similar relationships were noted for the number of experienced traumatic events. PTSD symptoms and the number of traumatic events experienced indirectly were found to be predictors of gambling addiction and PTSD symptoms turned out to be the only predictor of alcohol dependence.

Discussion:
PTSD has been shown to be more strongly associated with gambling problems.

Results:
PTSD is a stronger risk factor for developing gambling addiction than alcohol dependence. In cases like this, prevention programmes aimed at equipping people with coping skills after experiencing traumatic events may be effective at reducing the risk of developing substance dependence and behavioural addictions.
