Type 2 diabetes represents one of the greatest challenges in primary healthcare, requiring an individualized therapeutic approach that takes into account the presence of comorbidities. This article provides an overview of treatment recommendations for type 2 diabetes for primary care physicians. It discusses the use of therapies in the context of body weight reduction, improvement of metabolic control, and protection of cardiovascular and renal function, based on the principles of treatment individualization according to cardio-renal risk and the presence of other comorbid conditions. The article integrates current clinical evidence on the effectiveness of incretin-based therapies, highlighting their importance in optimizing care for patients with type 2 diabetes using available systemic tools.
