Despite progress in prophylaxis and treatment of infections, the problem of surgical site infection still remains
a difficult issue and a significant burden to health service providers. Simultaneously, the number and range of laparoscopic procedures has increased rapidly in recent years. The authors present a review concerning issues of metabolic and immunological response after open and laparoscopic surgery and results of clinical trials concerning surgical site infection rates in those two methods of surgery.
