In Poland, about 80,000 patients suffer from stroke each year. It is the third most common cause of death and the most common cause of disability in people over 40 years of age. Only 13–15% are treated causally (intravenous thrombolysis or mechanical thrombectomy). This treatment can reverse the huge neurological deficit caused by occlusion within cerebral arteries. In any case of suspected stroke, the patient should be transported to the nearest Stroke Unit by ambulance. The time from onset of stroke to the start of causal treatment is the most significant, single, modifying risk factor affecting prognosis. Therefore, as many people with ischaemic stroke as possible should be qualified for reperfusion treatment as soon as possible.
