Rhinitis is one of the most common medical conditions among both adults and children, including conditions with nasal congestion/obstruction, rhinorrhoea, sneezing, and pruritus resulting from inflammation and/or dysfunction of the nasal mucosa. Rhinitis can be categorised broadly into allergic rhinitis and nonallergic rhinitis. Although allergic rhinitis has a clear definition and pathophysiology, nonallergic rhinitis is still poorly defined and understood. Allergic rhinitis is an IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reaction to an inciting inhaled allergen, and traditionally allergic rhinitis has been classified as seasonal or perennial. Nonallergic rhinitis consists of a variety of heterogeneous conditions and requires further research and phenotyping.
