This review article describes gastrointestinal complications which are frequent in renal transplant recipients (10-37%) and may lead to graft loss and even patient death. They can include oral lesions, oesophagitis, peptic ulcer, pancreatitis, biliary tract diseases, diarrhoea, malignancy and colon disorders. These diseases may be related to infections, surgical complications, immunosuppressive regimens and exacerbation of pre-existing gastrointestinal pathology. The complication rate for the first post-transplantation year is 50%.
