Parasitic diseases are a common cause of health problems reported in people traveling to a hot climate zone. Parasitic infections may persist for many months and cause no or only little clinical symptoms. In some cases, especially those transmitted by food or water, an asymptomatic carrier may become the source of infection for the environment. A thorough medical interview is the foundation of the post-travel screening process in asymptomatic travelers who have returned from the tropics. If exposure to any risk factors during travel to areas with a harsh climate and poor sanitation is confirmed, further tests aimed at detecting specific pathogens should be recommended. The article provides information on the usefulness of the post-travel screening tests for selected parasitic infections in asymptomatic travelers returned from tropical countries.
