It has been well established that a healthy diet plays the key role in ischaemic heart disease (IHD) prevention. One of the most important dietary recommendations is to limit saturated fatty acids intake to <7% of energy and cholesterol to <200-300 mg/day, as well as minimizing trans fatty acids consumption, because these dietary components increase serum LDL cholesterol levels. The stress should be on increasing intake of vegetables and fruits (antioxidants, fibre, calcium, whole grain, high fibre foods (low energy density) and fish (polyunsaturated fatty acids n-3). To achieve or to maintain desirable body weight (BMI: 18.5-24.9 kg/m2) is of great significance. A particularly recommended dietary strategy to prevent IHD is a Mediterranean diet. Its cardioprotective effect has been proved in observational studies, as well as in one secondary prevention clinical trial (Lyon Heart Trial).
