Obesity is a chronic disease of complex etiology, not self-limiting and with a tendency to relapse. Poland still lacks an organized, publicly funded obesity treatment system implemented by therapeutic teams consisting of a physician, dietitian, psychologist and other specialists involved in the process of patient coordination and care. Currently, the family physician remains the first professional to be able to diagnose obesity and conduct its treatment. The Canadian Adult Obesity Clinical Practice Guidelines, based on the analysis of EBM (evidence based medicine) data, are addressed to primary care physicians. The article and the experts’ comments refer to the content of the guidelines, presenting the current state of knowledge on the diagnosis and treatment of obesity and its complications.
