Dyspnoea, decreased exercise tolerance, and peripheral oedema are the main symptoms of heart failure. These symptoms may occur also in other diseases. The diagnostic criteria for HF are presented. The algorithm for diagnosis of HF of non-acute onset in primary care or in a hospital outpatient clinic is given. It is based on the evaluation of the probability of HF.
