The paper presents the history and modern applications of diagnostic laparoscopy. The role of this diagnostic tool in the assessment of abdominal trauma, postoperative complications and stage of neoplastic disease advancement has been particularly stressed. Diagnostic laparoscopy continues to play an important role in the diagnosis of abdominal disorders, despite a rapid advancement of non-invasive imaging techniques. Its main application is to confirm suspicions and to help avoid unnecessary laparotomy in non-operational malignancies.
