It has been difficult to define the term quality of life. The notion was and still is construed differently by sociologists. They agree on the view that the quality of life refers to satisfying one’s needs. They also agree that in describing the denotation of the notion quality of life an analysis of objective and subjective determinants is equally significant. In the early stage of research into the quality of life a great deal of it concerned an objective determinant of satisfying people’s needs. Not until later were subjective determinants expressing the way of meeting people’s needs taken into consideration. The following article aims to explain what is meant by the quality of life and why it is so meaningful for patients and doctors alike.
