As general practitioners working with patients of all ages, we often meet in our practice the need to coordinate the treatment of a nursing woman. Very often mothers make a visit because of the symptoms of various infections. Many medications used to treat infections can be safely used during lactation. It is generally accepted that all medications transfer into human milk to some degree, although this degree is almost always quite low. Some of the medications are still recommended to be prescribed with special consideration. This may include stopping feeding after taking a dose or simply observing for any side effects in the breastfed child. There are also some medications that should not be used while breastfeeding.
