Diabetes type 2 is characterized by disturbances in terms of carbohydrate, fat and protein, resulting from the wrong function of insulin. It is often hard to recognize diabetes type 2 because of latent course of a disease. In the course of the diabetes not only organ changes occur but also skin lesions are developed. The most common skin lesions are: recrudescent mycotic and bacterial infections, excessive dry skin, the distortion of feet and nails, changes of the colorings within the lower limbs, the diabetic foot syndrome. The most dangerous skin complication is diabetic foot syndrome. The proper care of the skin by atient, regular checking the condition of the feet, proper care of a feet, wearing reliever insoles and comfortable shoes play important role in prevention of development of the diabetic foot.

The general level of patient’s knowledge about the prevention of skin lesions in diabetic has been identified as good. However, there is a need for systematic therapeutic education to encourage patients to put theory into practice.

Women suffering from diabetes type 2 have significantly higher knowledge in the prevention and care of skin lesions.

Respondents with higher and secondary education showed significantly higher levels of knowledge in the prevention of skin lesions in diabetes

A significant part of respondents admit to the inobservances of a healthy lifestyle, only 1/3 of respondents follow the recommendations of a diabetic diet, and 1/5 of patients practice regularly physical activity at least 3 times a week.
