Infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS) is one of the most common congenital defects requiring surgical intervention in the neonatal period. Infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis is characterized by a progressive hypertrophy of pyloric muscle. The prevalence of IHPS ranges from 1 to 4 in 1000 live births. The data reported in the literature suggest that risk of gastrointestinal abnormalities in patients after surgical treatment of IHPS is higher than the normal controls. The aetiology of gastrointestinal disorders remains unclear. The gastrointestinal abnormalities reported in patients after pyloromyotomy include duodenal and gastric ulcers, duodenal reflux and deformation of the duodenal bulb. Some studies have shown that pyloric motility is abnormal in these patients. In this report, we describe a family in which 3 persons were operated on because of infantile pyloric stenosis. Gastrointestinal pathologies were found in both adult brothers. The paper presents an analysis of publications related to gastrointestinal abnormalities in patients who have had pyloromyotomy for IHPS in infancy.
