Sleep disorders, particularly insomnia, are among the most common health problems affecting adults. Their consequences include reduced quality of life, impaired cognitive functioning, and an increased risk of developing both somatic and mental disorders. Herbal medicinal products with a well-established safety profile are increasingly used in the management of mild sleep disturbances and transient nervous tension. This review summarizes current evidence regarding the chemical composition, mechanisms of action, and clinical efficacy of selected medicinal plants used in sleep disorders and mild anxiety-related conditions. The therapeutic properties of valerian root (Valeriana officinalis), hops strobile (Humulus lupulus), lemon balm leaf (Melissa officinalis), lavender flower (Lavandula angustifolia), and passionflower herb (Passiflora incarnata) are discussed together with current evidence regarding fixed-combination herbal medicinal products containing these herbal substances. Current indications for use according to European Medicines Agency (EMA) herbal monographs are also presented.
