The philosophy of implementation of new imaging endoscopic technology relies on finding the suspected place in the gastrointestinal tract using conventional methods. High resolution endoscopy is used more and more frequently in this context. New imaging modalities, depending on high magnifications, scan relatively small mucosal areas and can be used as a second method on previously selected places. The aim of this manuscript is to describe the most important communications, published in 2006, dealing with new imaging endoscopic techniques. These modalities have been divided into 2 groups: relatively new techniques, which have an established position in endoscopists’ armamentarium, and experimental techniques. In the latter – besides the first communications – the technology is presented. In recognized methods are described: high resolution endoscopy, chromoendoscopy, narrow binding imaging and autofluorescence. In experimental methods are presented: confocal laser endomicroscopy, endocytoscopy and elastic scattering spectroscopy.
