The care over a breastfeeding mother, which is exercised by a family doctor, requires knowledge of the basic principles of diagnosis and treatment of simple lactation diseases. Due to the lack of access to refunded lactation consultancy and still too few specialists within the area of lactation, it is the family doctor who is often the person to whom the breastfeeding mother with her ailments gets. Lactation problems most often relate to diseases of the mammary gland and nipples, but they can also be complaints about insufficient milk supply or requests for help at the end of breastfeeding. Some of the problems can be solved at the primary health care, and in some cases specialist consultation is required. A woman who is breastfeeding should receive the necessary treatment in every situation, if her clinical condition so requires.
