Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EG) is a rare disease characterized by eosinophilic infiltration of the gut wall and abnormalities of gastro-intestinal function. The clinical features depend on the layer and location of the gastrointestinal tract involved. There are described: eosinophilic esophagitis, eosinophilic gastritis, and eosinophilic colitis. Aetiology of eosinophilic gastroenteritis is unknown. 50-75% of cases of EG coexist with allergy. Here, we discuss the available information regarding the functions of eosinophils within the gastrointestinal tract.
